Custode Azzurro conveys almost all of its expressiveness through its gaze. The face is constructed frontally and simplified to the point of becoming a sort of pictorial mask.

The blue color occupies the figure and contrasts with the red background, whose coarse texture remains clearly perceptible beneath the paint. The ochre area around the eyes further concentrates attention on the center of the composition.
