Cratere del Vuoto (Crater of Emptiness) is a black ceramic sculpture bowl from Sejnane, hand-shaped by Hanene following the ceramic knowledge of the women of the region, recognized by UNESCO.

The large concave basin is crossed by a central hole that takes away the traditional function of the object and transforms the void into the center of the composition.

Product Description

Cratere del Vuoto is born around an absence. The circular hole opened in the center interrupts the continuity of the basin and makes visible the surface on which the sculpture is placed. The bowl is therefore not designed to contain, but to connect earth, light, and empty space.

Hanene models the volume without a potter's wheel and works the interior with concentric movements. The traces of polishing remain legible on the surface, guiding the eye towards the central opening and enhancing the depth of the form.

The black hue is created during firing under straw. Smoke penetrates the clay, generating transitions from charcoal to anthracite, while polishing with seashells produces more intense reflections on the more burnished areas. Displayed on a wooden, stone, or metal table, the bowl’s presence changes according to the color visible through the hole.

Use and care

The open structure and natural porosity of terracotta make Cratere del Vuoto an exclusively decorative sculpture. Do not use with water, food, or liquid substances. Clean gently with a soft, completely dry cloth.
