Nereo is a ceramic sculpture that interprets the marine world through a deliberately free and textural form. The compact body, small reliefs, and large irregular tail retain the immediacy of the manual gesture, while the lead gray and chalky surface of the GESSO collection give it a quieter, almost fossil-like character.

Product Description

In Nereo, the fish appears more like a relic than a representation. The figure is immediately legible, but every detail is reduced to a mark: a raised eye, a few incised scales, lightly modelled fins, and a broad tail that opens irregularly.

The lead-grey surface completely changes the object's register. Where brighter colours highlight its ironic side, here the form takes on a more silent and tactile character. The marine subject almost seems to resurface from a sedimentary material, like a small fossil presence reinterpreted in a contemporary key.

The body remains deliberately compact. The tail, on the contrary, occupies a significant part of the composition and widens outwards with an undulating profile. It is this contrast between mass and openness that gives balance to the sculpture and makes it interesting even when viewed from the side.

There is no pursuit of anatomical perfection. The small marks on the surface retain a handmade quality and give the object that slight irregularity that distinguishes artisanal ceramic from a purely industrial element.

In lead-grey, the GESSO finish almost completely absorbs reflections. The colour becomes deep, mineral, easy to combine with wood, stone, marble, burnished metals, and neutral surfaces. On a bookshelf, a console, or a low table, Nereo can enter a composition without acting as a simple figurative object.

The sculpture is conceived and designed by CASAKŪ and subsequently handcrafted in Indonesia. The particular surface comes from the technique developed with artisans for the GESSO collection, through the application of a plaster primer that gives the ceramic a matte, soft, and deeply tactile finish.

Nereo thus sits between artistic ceramic, decorative sculpture, and design object: a recognizable figure, yet free enough to enter even essential and sophisticated interiors without taking on a purely ornamental character.
