Calice Nero is a black ceramic sculpture from Sejnane, hand-modeled by artisan Hanene following the ceramic traditions of the region's women, recognized by UNESCO.

The open, vertical form is marked by individually applied reliefs, while smoke firing creates a black finish with metallic reflections.

Product Description

Calice Nero vertically develops the structure of an ancient ritual vessel. The compact base supports a body that opens upwards, giving the form a stable yet slender balance.

Hanene works on the surface by applying a sequence of elongated reliefs. Arranged vertically, these elements reinforce the upward movement and create an alternation between illuminated parts and shadowed areas. The decoration is neither painted nor impressed with a mold: each relief is sculpted onto the still-fresh clay.

Firing under straw generates the deep black of the surface. Polishing with river stones primarily affects the more protruding parts, making them shinier compared to the opaque indentations. Side lighting allows this difference to be fully appreciated.

Use and Care

The piece is conceived as a decorative sculpture or to hold an essential dry arrangement. The terracotta is porous and should not be filled with water. Clean with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding pressure on the reliefs.

Each relief retains the pressure and rhythm of Hanene's hand, while the firing creates a finish that cannot be pre-programmed. Calice Nero is therefore an individual work, in which form, technique, and material remain inseparable. A sculpture selected by Vicode for its vertical presence and the silent strength of Sejnane ceramics.
