Green Portal – Geometric Sculpture in Glazed Ceramic

Portale Viride works by subtraction. A narrow, vertical, rectangular volume is almost entirely traversed by a single opening. What remains is the perimeter, the depth, and an empty space that becomes the true center of the composition.

There are no modules to repeat nor diagonals to interrupt the structure. Here, the gesture is more radical: a single opening constructs the entire object. From the front, the sculpture appears rigorous and almost two-dimensional; however, observing it from a three-quarter angle reveals how its seven centimeters of depth transform the rectangle into a cavity, making its architectural nature evident.

The green glaze covers the front and follows the inner surface of the opening. Light reacts to it irregularly, producing lighter passages, deeper areas, and small reflections that bring the color to life. The light outer surfaces, on the other hand, introduce a sharp pause and allow for immediate distinction between the frontal plane and the body of the sculpture.

This is a particularly interesting contrast because it concerns more than just color. On one side, there is the glazed surface, brighter and more mutable; on the other, a clear and silent presence that emphasizes the object’s thickness.

Selected in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Portale Viride belongs to the Echi di Geometria collection, where simple forms, openings, and modular structures are isolated and observed as small autonomous architectures.

The narrow and vertical proportion allows it to be easily placed in a bookshelf or on a shelf, but the piece gains particular strength when there is free space behind the opening. The background, light, and surrounding objects then enter the rectangle and temporarily become part of the composition.

Portale Viride is a unique piece. The variations in the glaze, the slight irregularities of the surface, and the traces of the ceramic craftsmanship are part of its identity.
