Land Passage – Geometric Sculpture in Natural Terracotta

The form develops horizontally like a small architectural volume. The inclined sides support a narrower upper part, while a trapezoidal passage opens in the center, lightening the mass and allowing the gaze to pass completely through the object.

It's an apparently simple geometry, but its seven-centimeter depth significantly alters its perception. From the front, the profile appears sharp and almost graphic; viewed from three-quarters, the opening gains depth and becomes a cavity, while the internal surfaces collect deeper shadows.

What distinguishes it from the other elements of Echi di Geometria is primarily the material. Here, there is no glaze: the terracotta remains natural, with its warm color and the slight irregularities that emerge on the surface. The geometry is defined, but not sterile; the material retains an earthy, tactile, and immediate quality.

This absence of coating makes the relationship between design and craftsmanship particularly evident. Small chromatic variations, non-uniform edges, and traces of the material are not corrected or hidden: they are part of the piece's character.

Selected in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Varco Terreno enters the Echi di Geometria collection as one of its most essential presences. Geometric forms, openings, and proportions are isolated and observed as sculptures, allowing light and space to complete their design.

The low and elongated proportion works well on a shelf, a bookcase, or a console, especially if there is enough space behind it for the opening to remain legible. Paired with stone, dark woods, metals, or shinier surfaces, the natural terracotta introduces a very distinct material contrast.
